INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL EDITING

 

1/  Remember the exercise with smiling face and kids / crash? Editing is the most basic, powerful tool for creating meaning (creating and manipulating language) of film / cinema / moving images.  How can we actually do this?

 

2/ A Little History:

 

          LINEAR EDITING

 

          Film editing (still used)

          Analog video editing

 

2/ Present Day:

 

          NON-LINEAR EDITING

         

          Digital, non-sequential (like word processing)

 

3/ Introduction to Mechanics of Editing (using Movie Maker)

 

          Always the same steps, regardless of specific platform:

                   1/ Shoot

                   2/ Capture on (import to) Computer (format pblms)

                   3/ Edit on Computer

                   4/ Create final version on computer

                   5/ Export to DVD, web etc. for viewing.

 

4/ Go through the various steps (except shoot)

         

·        Load the software

·        Take a quick tour

·        Download  some material from the Web (give addresses on     course website). Bring in video and images if you like. FORMAT PROBLEMS .mov , .wmv, .mpg, .divX, high def …

·        Find and add some music (Portishead example). Import in the same way

·        Play with putting things on the timeline, moving them around,     cutting them (the essence of editing), and adding transitions

·        Export (and upload to youtube if you like), or save as low res and       email it

         

 

5/ What can we do with movie maker?

 

          Show two examples of films (chronos animation and rap eraser)         NOTE : NO ACTUAL VIDEO IN EITHER
